Security

The wx/net server may be set up in secure mode, which requires connecting clients to supply passwords in a manner similar to a Unix login. In addition to passwords, each user may have a maximum login number and class of service assigned to them. The former controls how many clients a particular user id may have connected at once, whereas the latter permits selective access to various services for a given user (e.g. real-time data might be permitted but chat services are blocked). This gives the administrator control over who may use what resources the wx/net server has to offer.

Passwords are encrypted at both the server and client end, and the transmission of the password over the network is encrypted again using a random key value selected at login time. This prevents easy viewing of users' passwords in data network traffic. Administrators may reset user passwords but they cannot see what they are nor decipher them, thus protecting users' privacy. The system is not guaranteed to be foolproof, but it should be adequate for the intended usage.
